More Information

HISTORY OF METROLINA NEPHROLOGY ASSOCIATES, PA (MNA)

MNA and Metrolina Kidney Center (MKC) have a long history in the greater Charlotte area.  MNA’s founder, Dr. Charles Farmer completed one of the first nephrology training programs and brought the new specialty of nephrology to the Charlotte area in 1969.   He managed the area’s first renal transplant.  The opening of the first outpatient dialysis unit in the Carolinas took place in 1973. Shortly thereafter home hemodialysis training began allowing patients to receive life-saving dialysis therapy in their homes.

Because of rapid growth, a new Kidney Center opened in July of 1975 to provide 26 stations for in-center hemodialysis and four stations for home hemodialysis training, as well as office space for three nephrologists.  With the addition of peritoneal dialysis as a treatment modality, the Kidney Center expanded into additional facilities. Additional growth, especially with patients from the Gaston County area, led to the establishment a dialysis facility in Gaston County in November 1980.

Having grown to five nephrologists, Metrolina Nephrology Associates PA was incorporated in 1983, and the dialysis units were acquired by the predecessor of Fresenius Medical Care in 1984.  Expansion continued throughout the entire Metrolina region, opening up dialysis units in surrounding areas of Monroe, Albemarle, Lincolnton, Belmont and Kings Mountain as well as numerous units in Charlotte.

MNA added full time staff in the Gastonia office in October 1993 and opened offices in Monroe (1998), Matthews (1999), Pineville (2007), Huntersville (2008) and Mooresville (2008). The Charlotte office moved to its present location on Randolph Road in February of 2006 and opened the Metrolina Access Center in December, 2006.

In 2010, Southeast Renal Associates, PA joined the practice bringing six nephrologists to help support the Charlotte metro-region dialysis population.  Central Carolina Nephrology joined forces with MNA early 2013, accompanying five more physicians to expand coverage into the Concord, Kannapolis and Salisbury landscape, which included area dialysis facilities and hospitals.   Each of these additions have been made so that MNA can continue to offer comprehensive care for renal diseases in convenient locations for the citizens of this area.
